The Stitches You'll Need to Know to Crochet a Coin Purse

For this coin purse you will need to know a few crochet stitches. These stitches are quite easy to get the hang of and make working up this bag a breeze.

First you will need to know how to single crochet. The single crochet stitch or sc when it is abbreviated is a basic crochet stitch that most beginners first learn when they are starting out.

Single Crochet (sc):

  1. Insert hook from front to back in the second chain from the hook or designated stitch
  2. Bring the yarn over (YO) the hook and pull the yarn back through the chain from back to front  (2 loops on hook).
  3. YO and pull through both loops on the hook.

This pattern also calls for a puff stitch. Puff stitches can be made with a half double crochet, double crochet and more. It can also can be made with a variance of 2-6 stitches.

For this pattern we are going to use a two half double crochet puff stitch.

Half Double Crochet Puff (hdc puff):

  1. Yarn over (yo), insert hook into st, yo, and draw back through the st (3 loops on hook)
  2. Yo, insert hook into same stitch again, yo, and draw back through the st (5 loops hook)
  3. Yo and draw through all five loops on the hook.

How to Crochet a Coin Purse

Skill Level: Intermediate

Materials

  • Less than 30 yards of Lion Brand Re-Up yarn or any medium weight 4 cotton blend yarn
  • 3.75 mm F crochet hook
  • yarn needle
  • scissors
  • tape

Crochet Abbreviations

  • hdc puff: Yarn over (yo), insert hook into st, yo, and draw back through the st (3 loops on hook), yo, insert hook into same stitch again, yo, and draw back through the st (5 loops hook), yo and draw through all five loops on the hook.
  • sc = single crochet
  • sl st(s) = slip stitch(es)
  • ch(s) = chain(s)
  • sk = skip

Notes

  • sl st (s) that join rounds do not count as stitches (st(s))
  • ch(s) at the beginning of the rounds do not count as stitches (st(s))
  • Written in standard US terms
  • Gauge is not important
  • Finished size is approximately 3″ high by 4″ circumference.

The Coin Purse Pattern

Round 1: Make a magic circle, 10 sc's into the magic circle, sl st to first sc. (10)

Round 2: ch 1, sc 2x in each st around, sl st to first sc. (20)

Round 3: ch 1, hdc puff, sc, *hdc puff, sc, repeat around ending with a sl st to the top of the first hdc puff. (20)

Round 4- 8: ch 1, sc into each st around, sl st to the top of the first sc. (20)

Round 9: Ch 1, sc into the first st, ch 1, sk a st, * sc into the next st, ch 1, sk a st, repeat from * around ending with a ch 1. sl st into the top of the first sc. (20)

Round 10: Ch 1, sc 2x into each ch 1 space around, sl st to the top of the first sc. (20)

Round 11: Ch 1, sc into each st around, sl st to the top of the first sc. (20)

Round 12: Ch 1, sl st into each st around, sl st to the top of the first sl st. (20)

Finishing

Fasten off yarn.

How to make a Braided Tie:

Cut three 12-inch pieces of yarn with scissors. Tie together at the top leaving a 1.5 inch piece of yarn free.

Tape the three pieces of yarn down to a table or hard surface to secure them for braiding.

Braid the three pieces of yarn until about 1.5″ of yarn is left. Knot the end.

Use a yarn needle or crochet hook weave in and out of the spaces that were made in round 9.

Pull through so that the side of the braid are even on both sides.

Cut the tail ends, so they are even and brush out to the tails to create fullness.
